Stylish Wedding Make up Inspiration // 5 mins with Jenni Hughes

Stylish Wedding Make Up Inspiration  //  5 Mins With Jenni Hughes

In the past,  I have been in the fortunate position to have worked with some of the most amazing wedding suppliers in Suffolk and across the UK, with many of which becoming great friends.  I know that many of my prospective and current clients check out my blog from time to time to see what I’ve been up to, which got me thinking.  What better way to introduce some of my trusted vendor friends to my clients than to give them the spotlight for 5 minutes here on my blog where they could tell us about their business, their inspirations and what makes them tick.  So here you have it, a new series of interviews has been born, I hope you enjoy them.

Today I had the chance to sit down with Jenni Hughes, a super talented wedding make up artist who is based in Nottingham, UK.  I had the real pleasure of working alongside Jenni this year at a styled shoot hosted by the UK Alliance of Wedding Planners at the gorgeous Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket, Suffolk.

For those readers who may not have come across your work before, please can you tell us a little about your background and how you got into wedding make up artistry?

I set up Make up By Jenni in 2009. Initially I used my previous skills and experience gained in makeup for special occasion makeup advertising in the local area, Facebook groups and via word of mouth. My daughter was a baby and I wanted a part time job around my passion. Makeup!  From there my business and brand grew rapidly and I was soon working on weddings, photoshoots and commercial work with a very busy diary!

Over the last few years I have worked with hundreds of brides and I now take on an exclusive number of weddings per year alongside my commercial work with major brands, designers and celebrities.

In three words how would you describe your brand/business?

Luxury, Flawless, Makeup.

Who or what inspires the creativity in your work?

I love bridal fashion and keep up with the trends from the fashion houses. Particularly CHANEL and Dior. I follow the makeup brands and makeup artists that I love... Bobbi Brown, Lisa Eldridge and Alex Box.  Every face I see in everyday life inspires me. Make up is art and every face is a canvas.

What trends are you currently seeing and how do you predict the future looks for wedding make up artistry here in the UK?

Bridal makeup trends vary but I do love the move towards more pared back bohemian and ethereal looks.  I do not believe makeup should mask natural beauty. Instead creating an elegant, timeless look which compliments the overall feel of the day. Creating a polished version of each woman.

How far in advance do you suggest couples come talk to you about their wedding?

Brides tend to book 1-2 years in advance to guarantee availability.  However it's been known for last minute enquiries to come in and if I'm available it's my pleasure to be there!

Which wedding blogs or magazines do you recommend that couples check out, in order to gain inspiration?

It's been a privilege to have been an expert panel member for Brides Magazine this year in the Brides Beauty awards. Brides magazine is the go to magazine for any bride to be. It's also the magazine I bought religiously when planning my own wedding.  The wedding blog world is vast and each blog has a distinct style and audience. I personally love Rock my Wedding.

What advice would you give couples when choosing their wedding MUA?

Do your research. Look at the website and portfolios. Ask questions. What products do they use? What is included in the service? Look for testimonials. Book in advance, the best makeup artist's get booked up quickly.

Finally, what's the best thing about being a wedding MUA?

There are so many amazing things about being a wedding makeup artist but if I had to choose one it would be the brides themselves. I've met so many truly amazing and inspirational women from Doctors and Solicitors to social workers and stay at home mums. ALL with a common goal to want to look and feel beautiful for one of the most important days in their lives.  It's a joy to be a part of that day. Seeing the bride ready to go completely radiant in her wedding dress will never get old.

My sincere thanks to Jenni for her time.  If you would like to speak to Jenni about your forthcoming wedding, please check out her website at You can also follow on Facebook Twitter.
