Suffolk Family Photography
My guess is that you've clicked on this article because you're considering a family portrait session, either with myself or indeed another photographer and are looking for some tips and inspiration on what you need to do up front, in order to get the best out of your family shoot.
Depending on the photographer you choose to work with, they will all have different ways to assist and guide you through the planning stage of your family portrait session, in order for you to ensure that you get exactly what you would love from your time together.
But what is there to plan?
I get it. Maybe you've had a family session before and just rocked up on the day to have your photos taken. But let me take some time to share how I personally assist the families I work with, in preparing them with a pre-session consultation call. I think you'll be surprised to see some cool benefits from doing so.
Your pre-session consultation is simply a phone call with myself. This will be arranged for a convenient day and time so that you can chat for around 15-20mins. This can also happen over Skype or Facetime should you live further afield or if it's simply your preference.
During this call, I like to find out more about you, your family and what you would really love to achieve with our time together. I love it when families share as much as they can about their individual personalities, so I can assist in making these shine in your photography. Particularly with children, it's really helpful to understand what things they're into. Knowing the kinds of TV shows, characters, music etc they are into, is helpful to know come to the shoot. This enables me to really engage with the kids, make them giggle and generally help to build their trust.
I will also help you decide where you would like your photographs taken. As a photographer that primarily works outside, the world is our oyster. I'd recommend that you have a chat between yourselves before the call, in order to come up with a few ideas for us to discuss during the call. Maybe there are places you love to go as a family at weekends that you'd really love to use for the session? The benefit of chatting this over in advance is that I can guide you through the pros and cons of any particular location in order for us to pick the perfect place for both your family and the particular season.
What to wear is something that we always run through also. Generally, I will encourage the families I work with just to choose a wardrobe that feel comfortable and is appropriate for the location and time of year, but you will also have the opportunity to discuss any particular clothing-related questions you may have.
Finally, we will have a chat about which photographic products you have been drawn to from the website or my product guide. From knowing exactly how you would love to present your photography in your home, allows me to shoot with this in mind so that we can capture photographs that will complement these types of products.
By the end of the call you will be really excited about your shoot, fully prepared and ready to have some fun! I hope this has helped convey some of the real benefits of planning your session with your portrait photographer.
Always remember that your photographer is there to assist you in any way they can and so always feel free to reach out to them with any particular questions you may have.
