Suffolk wedding photographer Ross Dean is named a regional finalist / The Wedding Industry Awards 2014

You may remember a recent post on the blog that shared the great news that I was up for the 'Photographer' award in The Wedding Industry Awards 2014together with just a handful of other Suffolk wedding photographers. Well, I received the awesome news this week that I have actually been shortlisted as a finalist in the East Anglian regional category.  I was really taken back when the email came through and so really just wanted to share this on the blog to send out a huge 'Thank You' to all my fantastic 2013 clients that voted for me.  It is so appreciated and I am very proud to be flying the flag for Suffolk wedding photographers in the UK.

A Suffolk Countryside Engagement in Thorpeness / Kerry & Graham

a suffolk countryside engagement in Thorpeness / rossdeanphotography.com

Kerry & Graham are to get married at The Church of St Andrew,  in AldringhamSuffolk next month, followed by a beautiful reception at The Dolphin Inn, in Thorpeness.  The day sounds like its going to be really amazing and I was super excited to catch up with them again last week for their engagement shoot. The guys chose a really beautiful countryside walk setting, near to home in Thorpeness,as walking is something they really love to do whenever they can.  So accompanied by Graham's beautiful dog, Ben, we headed out on what seemed like was going to be a little drizzly April afternoon, but were really grateful that the sky opened up just at the right time and gave us some lovely dry weather just when we needed it.

I had such fun and it was really an honour to celebrate their engagement with images full of fun, love and laughter to really treasure.

Wedding Cinematography Inspiration in Suffolk / Camera On Films

Camera On Films, Suffolk - rossdeanphotography.com

In the past,  I have been in the fortunate position to have worked with some of the most amazing wedding suppliers in Suffolk and across the UK, with many of which becoming great friends.  I know that many of my prospective and current clients check out my blog from time to time to see what I’ve been up to, which got me thinking.  What better way to introduce some of my trusted vendor friends to my clients than to give them the spotlight for 5 minutes here on my blog where they could tell us about their business, their inspirations and what makes them tick.  So here you have it, a new series of interviews has been born, I hope you enjoy them.

Today I had the chance to sit down with videographer Alex Cameron of Camera On Films, who are based in Suffolk, UK.

Camera On Films, Suffolk - rossdeanphotography.com

Ross: For those readers who may not have come across your work before, please can you tell us a little about your background and how you got into wedding cinematography?

Alex: Sure. Well, I never wanted to be a 9 to 5'er as the thought of it just bored me to death. So when I left school I spent the first summer working at a local golf club which was really cool and decided I wanted to pursue a career in golf. I managed to get my handicap down to 4.6, the .6 is very important by the way!, but this wasn't good enough to actually turn pro and take my PGA degree. I had always been fascinated by movies and it just blew my mind thinking about all the work that went into putting a feature film together. I then had the opportunity to video a wedding for one of my girlfriend's best friends and absolutely loved the experience. It was so satisfying handing over the finished article knowing it would be something that they would always treasure that I thought if I could do this all the time and get paid for it then it would be pretty cool! About 6 months later and two more weddings filmed I started my company.

Ross: In three words how would you describe your brand/business?

Alex: Professional. Modern. Creative

Ross: Who or what inspires the creativity in your work?

Alex: Personal experiences and emotions that come about in everyday life are massively powerful tools for inspiring my work. I love catching those moments that are very real and unstaged. I love looking around at other film makers doing what we do and really enjoy watching their work. I take a lot of inspiration from looking at these amazing people producing these unbelievable films in  countries like the US and Australia then trying to improve on them or come up with my own way of achieving similar results.

Ross: What trends are you currently seeing and how do you predict the future looks for wedding cinematography in the UK?

Alex: I think there is definitely a growing trend in just having a wedding cinematographer at weddings in the UK which is a massive improvement on a few years ago. Also the average age of cinematographer is coming down too as more young film makers gain access to incredible equipment and technology. In fairness, cinematography itself is becoming a growing trend as it used to be more widely known as videography but I think the style and approach to wedding filming is now so much more like you'd see in feature films that cinematography is a much more appropriate term. I just see wedding cinematography in the UK becoming one of those necessary items on a potential Bride and Grooms wish list alongside photography. In addition to this, the way people will be watching their wedding films is definitely going to be something that will be different in the near future and I expect that in maybe 3 years we will be at a stage where all our films are delivered digitally as opposed to physical media such as DVDs.

Ross: How far in advance do you suggest couples come talk to you about their wedding movie?

Alex: I would love to get to a stage where couples are thinking about coming to speak to us alongside the same sort of time that they are looking to speak to their photographer. I would say that once they have their date set and the venue has been decided upon then it is a great time to come and speak to us.

Ross: What wedding blogs or magazines do you recommend that couples check out?

Alex: To be honest, I don't actually read a lot of wedding blogs or magazines as I don't tend to get a lot of time to do so but when I do get a chance I love to flick through Pure Weddings magazine which is a great local magazine and I often know a lot of the suppliers being featured. We also occasionally get a mention which is lovely. I also know that there is a new blog that is shortly going to be launched called the Suffolk Wedding Showcase which I will definitely be checking out whenever I can as it is the brainchild of a very good supplier friend of ours and will feature all the best bits about getting married in Suffolk.

Ross: What advice would you give couples when choosing their wedding cinematographer?

Alex:   Make sure you look at their 'actual' work before making any decisions. No fancy show reels but the actual films they are delivering to their brides and grooms. Also, I fully believe that you get what you pay for. If they promise that they can film your wedding from Bridal Preps to First Dance with two cameras and do it all for less than £800 then be cautious. Finally, make sure you pick someone who gets you and what you're about. They should be personable and professional as it is a really intimate moment in your life so you want some who you feel comfortable to share it with but trust to get the job done at the same time.

Ross: Finally, what's the best thing about being a wedding cinematographer?

Alex: I am a geek and love playing with cameras and computers! No seriously, I genuinely love being a wedding cinematographer. We get to share such lovely times with our clients and capture such incredible moments that it honestly doesn't feel like work. It is tough at times and can be very pressurising as we don't get a second chance to get it right, but the feeling that I get when we have feedback from clients that are delighted with their film makes it truly worthwhile.

My thanks to Alex Cameron for his time taken to chat with me.  If you would like to speak to Alex about your wedding movie, please visit his website at http://www.cameraonfilms.co.uk.  You can also follow Alex on Facebook & Twitter.

An impromptu shoot for Suffolk Wedding Planner / Caroline Gould

Wedding Planners Suffolk - Caroline Gould - rossdeanphotography.com

You know, sometimes its those last minute shoots with very little prep and planning that end up looking great.  This was such a shoot when my good friend and Suffolk wedding planner Caroline Gould asked me to take some new promo shots for her forthcoming re-brand and for use in various publications that she would soon be writing articles for. We headed down to central Ipswich for a coffe at Arlingtons Brasserie, one of our favourite places and venue to the monthly wedding network events that we run.  Over drinks Caroline explained that she needed some new headshots which captured 'her' and some other shots that kind of explained what she did without being too cheesy.

So after an hour or so shooting in and around the coffee house, this is what we achieved.  I was really pleased with the outcome, as someone that knows Caroline well, I think the portraits capture her bubbly, friendly persona beautifully.

Bespoke Wedding Cake Inspiration / CRUMB! Suffolk Cakes

crumb bespoke suffolk cakes - anmar robinson - rossdeanphotography.com

In the past,  I have been in the fortunate position to have worked with some of the most amazing wedding suppliers in Suffolk and across the UK, with many of which becoming great friends.  I know that many of my prospective and current clients check out my blog from time to time to see what I’ve been up to, which got me thinking.  What better way to introduce some of my trusted vendor friends to my clients than to give them the spotlight for 5 minutes here on my blog where they could tell us about their business, their inspirations and what makes them tick.  So here you have it, a new series of interviews has been born, I hope you enjoy them.

Today I had the chance to sit down with Anmar Robinson of CRUMB! Bespoke Suffolk Cakes, who are based in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, UK.

Ross: For those readers who may not have come across your work before, please can you tell us a little about your background and how you got into cake artistry?

Anmar: My parents are hoteliers and grew up in the hospitality environment so being in the kitchen has always been a part of my life.  I am a professional chef, but always found myself working in the pastry section at every hotel or restaurant I worked at.  I guess you can say baking comes naturally to me (luckily!).   After spending 4 years as the head chef on a private yacht travelling the world, I moved to Suffolk with my husband and decided it was time to rekindle my love for cakes and baking and this is how CRUMB! was born.

Ross: In three words how would you describe your brand/business?

Anmar: Daring, different & delicious! ;)

Ross: Who or what inspires the creativity in your work?

Anmar: Everything and anything.  I see cakes in every design I come across, be it a floral arrangement, a beautiful dress, cool patterns on fabrics to jewellery.  Inspiration comes from all around us and that is why I ask brides to bring as many items possible with them (like stationery, fabric swatches, pictures etc) when we meet for our design session

Bespoke Wedding Cake Inspiration from CRUMB!

Ross: What trends are you currently seeing and how do you predict the future looks for cake artistry in the UK?

Anmar: BIG cakes are in at the moment with brides are choosing cakes with 4, 5 and even 6 tiers! With the recent boom in the baking industry due to programs like the Great Britsh Bake Off, Ace of Cakes, Cake Boss, Cupcake Wars, Staten Island Cakes etc etc (theres loads more!) the industry is expanding and ever growing.   Couples are truly embracing the fact that a cake can really add to the entire theme and feel of your day and does not have to be a white, floral traditional number - your cake can be anything you want it to be!  The future isn't set in stone when it comes to wedding cakes, its just keeping up with trends and fashions.

Ross: How far in advance do you suggest couples come talk to you about their wedding cake?

Anmar: As soon as possible.  Dates fill up quite fast and all the orders coming on now (June) are for next summer with this summer being about 90% fully booked! The design and style of the cake can always be changed as we go along, but it is crucial to "save the date" in your bakers cake diary to avoid dissapointment.

Ross: What wedding blogs or magazines do you recommend that couples check out?

Anmar: Where can I start! First of all - check out The Suffolk Wedding Showcase (another project of mine!).  With regards to other blogs I love, I would recommend The Pretty Blog, Rock n Roll Bride, Whimsical Wonderland Weddings, London Bride, Green Wedding Shoes, Ruffled and Love My Dress.  A new magazine on the wedding scene is Unique bride magazine - they offer something very different to the usual pink and frill cladded wedding glossy,  filled with things that no one can afford anyway :)

Ross: What advice would you give couples when choosing their cake artist?

Anmar:   Look for someone thats stands out from the rest and catches your eye .  Look at their galleries and also see if they have a blog and a facebook page - youll "know" when you find "the one".   Its a bit like a wedding dress I think!

Ross: Finally, what's the best thing about being a cake artist?

Anmar: Well, for me its being able to call my hobby (that I love), my job!

A Fun Norfolk Coastline Engagement in Blakeney / Claire + Mark

blakeney wedding engagement shoot - norfolk - rossdeanphotography.com

Something I especially love about my job is that I get a chance to experience new places tucked away in corners of the country that I haven't visited before.   So when Claire & Mark told me that they had decided to choose Blakeney in Norfolk as the location for their engagement shoot I was intrigued and excited to experience this small village they obviously have such a close affection for. Blakeney itself is a gorgeous coastal village on the North Norfolk coast which dates back to medieval times when it was once a bustling commercial port.  Today, it's a stunning part of Norfolk offering long walks along the coastline and an array of eateries and small shops, making it a very popular tourist destination.

The village is particularly dear to Claire and Mark because they often spend new year down there tucked up in a gorgeous little cottage, enjoying the experience with good friends and good food.  After a spot of lunch, we headed down to the shore, along the promenade and throughout the village streets to capture their engagement images.  I'm very blessed to do what I do and that I get to work with something truly lovely people.  Claire and Mark are no exception and being around them for the afternoon, it was evident how perfect they are for one another, with their playful affection  shining through in their finished images.

I'm really excited to be shooting their wedding this July at Woodhall Manor, near Woodbridge.  Here are a collection of images from the day.

The Truly Marvellous Wedding Fair: Video Recap, Kenton Hall Estate, Suffolk

Truly Marvellous Wedding Fair - Spring 2012 on Vimeo

Last weekend I had a great time at The Truly Marvellous Wedding Fair at Kenton Hall Estate in Suffolk. Kenton Hall Estate is a beautiful new venue in the heart of Suffolk and is home to some of the most stunning grounds, making it ideal for anyone looking to hold their big day in the heart of Suffolk tranquility.  It's also one of the only venues in the region to offer 'Glamping' for their client's guests, giving a fun, quirky alternative to the usual accommodation choices.

Their first wedding show was a huge success, sourcing some of the most creative and revered wedding vendors Suffolk has to offer and I can't wait until the next one.  I also had the opportunity to chat with some really fun couples, so thanks to all you guys too, whom I had the pleasure to speak too.

Please take some time to watch the below video charting the day, courtesy of the ever-awesome Camera on Films.
